Plesiolophus warnerensis
(Near Parasaurolophus, from Warner)Etymology
Plesiolophus is derived from the Greek "plesios" (near) and "lophos" (crest), which is a bit of cheeky naming symmetry: on the duck-billed dinosaur family tree, Plesiolophos sits "near Parasaurolophus", a Lambeosaurine whose own name once mistakenly placed it "near Saurolophus".
The species epithet, warnerensis, is derived from "Warner" (a village close to where it was discovered) and the Latin "-ensis" (from).
Discovery
The remains of Plesiolophus were discovered in the Oldman Formation (Comrey Sandstone Zone) at the Milk River Ridge Reservoir locality near the village of Warner, southern Alberta, Canada, by Wendy Sloboda. The holotype (TMP 2016.023.0039) is a partial skull.
