Asiatyrannus xui
(Xu's Asian Tyrant)Etymology
Asiatyrannus is derived from "Asia" (the continent on which is was discovered) and the Latin "tyrannus" (tyrant). The species epithet, xui, honours distinguished palaeontologist Xing Xu of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (Chinese Academy of Sciences), who has contributed greatly to the study of dinosaurs from China.
Discovery
The remains of Asiatyrannus were discovered in the Nanxiong Formation, Shahe Town, Nankang District, Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, China, in 2017.
The holotype (ZMNH M30360, housed at Zhejiang Museum of Natural History, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China) is a nearly complete skull and partial disarticulated skeleton, including tail vertebrae, a right leg (thigh, shin, calf, metatarsals and toe bones), and a partial left leg (partial midshaft of the left shin and calf, and metatarsals).
