Fukuititan nipponensis
(Fukui giant from Japan)Etymology
Fukuititan is derived from "Fukui" (for Fukui Prefecture) and the Greek "Titan" (Giant), alluding to its place of discovery and great size.
The species epithet, nipponensis, is derived from the Sino-Japanese "Nippon" (Japan) and the Latin "-ensis" (from).
Discovery
The remains of Fukuititan were discovered in the Kitadani Formation (Akaiwa Subgroup, Tetori Group) at Bonebed II of the Kitadani Dinosaur Quarry, on the Sugiyama River in the northern part of Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, Hokuriku, Honshu Island, Japan, by staff from the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum in 2007.
The holotype (FPDM-V8468) is an associated skeleton (three teeth, two pieces of a neck vertebral arch, three tail vertebrae, a partial shoulder blade, parts of both arms, a right thigh and shin, a partial left calf, and some bone fragments) found in one small area of the quarry.
