Loricosaurus is derived from the Latin "lorica" (body armour) and the Greek "sauros" (lizard).
The species epithet, scutatus, is derived from the Latin "scutum" (long shield) and "-atus" (indicating the possession of a thing or feature, "ed").
Discovery
The remains of Loricosaurus were discovered in the Anacleto Formation at the Cinco Saltos locality, General Roca city, Río Negro province, northern Patagonia, Argentina, by Santiago Roth, Walter Schiller and Ricardo Wichmann, between 1921 and 1923.
The holotype, housed at Museo de La Plata, consists of 26 armour plates, catalogued as MLP.Cs. 1210, 1213-1215, 1218-1221, 1226, 1228-1232, 1235, 1237, 1470-1477, 2006, and 2010.
