Alocodon kuehnei
(Kühne's Furrowed Tooth)Etymology
Alocodon is derived from the Greek "alox" (furrow) and "odon" (tooth), named for the vertical "furrows" (grooves) on its teeth.
The
species epithet,
kuehnei, honours German palaeontologist Georg Kühne.
Discovery
The first remains of
Alocodon were found in the Cabaços Formation near Pedrógão village, Provinca do Beira Litoral, Portugal.
The
holotype (LPFU P X 2, previously catalogued as PFUB P X 1 when housed at the Free University of Berlin) is a single tooth with an enlarged central denticle. Another 157 isolated teeth from Portugal have since been assigned to
Alocodon, along with isolated teeth from the Forest Marble and Chipping Norton Formations of England, based on similarity.
