Nanningosaurus dashiensis
(Nanning Lizard from Dashi)Etymology
Nanningosaurus is derived from "Nanning" (for
Nanning City) and the Greek "sauros" (lizard). The species epithet, dashiensis (dah-shee-EN-sis), is derived from the Pinyin "da-shi" (meaning "big stone", the name of the village where it was discovered) and the Latin "ensis" (from).
Discovery
The remains of Nanningosaurus were discovered in the red beds of the Nadu Formation (Nalong Basin) at Dashi village, Nanning
City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China, by the Natural History Museum of Guangxi (NHMG) in 1991.
The holotype (NHMG8142) includes a partial skull, one tooth, a neck vertebra, a partial left shoulder blade, parts of both upper arms, one hip bone (ischium), a left thigh, and both shins. The paratype (NHMG8143) is a relatively complete tooth-bearing bone from the right upper jaw.
