Oxalaia is named for "Oxalá" (the most respected masculine deity in the African pantheon, introduced in Brazil during slavery).
The
species epithet,
quilombensis, is derived from the Portuguese expression "quilombo", referring to the settlements, such as Cajual Island, where the quilombola (the descendants of former Brazilian slaves) live, and the Latin "ensis" (from).
