Goyocephale lattimorei
(Lattimore's Decorated Head)Etymology
Goyocephale is derived from the Mongolian "goyo" (decorated or elegant) and the Greek "kephale" (head) referring to the many bony knobs and bumps on the rear edge of its thick skull roof.
The species epithet, lattimorei, is named in honour of American Orientalist Professor Owen Lattimore.
Discovery
The remains of Goyocephale were discovered at Boro Khovil, 10 km west of Dzamyn Khond (60 km west of Bulgan Somon and south of the Arts Bogd Ull Mountain), South Gobi Desert, Mongolia, by Altangerel Perle in 1977.
The holotype (GI SPS 100/1501) is a partial skull including a complete skull roof and jaws with teeth, the first neck vertebrae (atlas), a block of four hip vertebrae (sacrum), 32 tail vertebrae, a pelvic bone (ilia), a partial left arm (humerus, ulna, radius, finger bones), a partial left leg (partial thigh, shin, calf, foot bones) and some unidentifiable fragments.
