Eshanosaurus deguchiianus
(Deguchi's Eshan Lizard)Etymology
Eshanosaurus is derived from "Eshan" (for Eshan County in Yunnan Province, southern China) and the Greek "sauros" (lizard).
The
species epithet,
deguchiianus (day-goo-chee-YAY-nus), honours Hikaru Deguchi who encouraged lead author Xing Xu to study dinosaurs.
Discovery
The remains of
Eshanosaurus were discovered at the Lower Lufeng Formation, Dianchung, Eshan County, Yunnan Province, China, by Zhao Xijin in 1971.
The
holotype (IVPP V11579, housed at Beijing's Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology) is a lower jaw bone and teeth.
