Panphagia protos
(First all-eater)
Etymology
Panphagia is derived from the Greek "pan" (all) and "phagein" (to eat/eater), in reference to its (possibly) omnivorous
diet. The "all eater" was happy to eat it all.
The
species epithet,
protos, means "first" in Greek: a reference to
Panphagia's lowly position at the base of Sauropodomorpha, though, geologically, it may not be the oldest sauropodomorph.
Discovery
The remains of
Panphagia were discovered in the Cancha de Bochas Member of the Ischigualasto Formation, Valle Pintado, Hollada de Ischigualasto, San Juan, Argentina, by Argentinean paleontologist Ricardo N. Martinez during the 2006 field season of the Museo de Ciencias Naturales of San Juan Province in
Ischigualasto Provincial Park.
The
holotype (PVSJ 874) is a partial skull.
