Kansaignathus sogdianus
(Kansai jaw from Sogdiana)Etymology
Kansaignathus is derived from "Kansai" (the locality where the holotype specimen was discovered) and the Greek "gnathos" (jaw).
The
species epithet,
sogdianus (sog-dee-AH-nuss), is derived from Sogdiana, an ancient historical region in Central Asia.
Discovery
The remains of
Kansaignathus were discovered in the Yalovach Formation at the Kansai locality, northern Fergana Valley, about 22 km to the north of Khudzhand Town, Sughd Region, Tajikistan, by the Paleontological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1963—1964.
The
holotype (2398/15) is a right dentary (tooth-bearing bone of the lower jaw).
Referred material from the same locality includes a tooth (PIN 3041/45), a
back vertebra (PIN 3041/11), three finger bones (PIN 2398/4, 2398/17, and 2398/18), two pelvic fragments (PIN 2398/16 and 2398/1), and a fragmentary metatarsal (PIN 2398/19). However, the back vertebra turned out to belong to a crocodile ancestor.
