Hamititan combines "Hami" (the city where the specimen was found) and "titan" (a giant from Greek mythology).
The
species epithet,
xinjiangensis, means "from Xinjiang" in Latin.

Discovery
The remains of
Hamititan were discovered in the Shengjinkou Formation (Tugulu Group) at Hami City, Xinjiang, China, by the Hami field team of the IVPP in 2013.
The
holotype (HM V22) is a series of seven tail vertebrae and three partial chevrons. A partial theropod tooth was found amongst the remains.
