Archaeodontosaurus descouensi
(Descouens' Ancient-Toothed Lizard)Etymology
Archaeodontosaurus is derived from the Greek "archaios"
(ancient), "odon" (tooth) and "sauros" (lizard), referring to its strongly serrated teeth resembling those of older
sauropodomorphs (prosauropods). The species epithet, descouensi, honour Dr Didier Descouens who found the specimen.
Discovery
The remains of Archaeodontosaurus were found in the Isalo IIIb formation at Ambondromamy village in
the valley of the Kamoro River, about 150 km SW of the
coastal town of Mahajanga (Majunga), northwestern Madagascar, by Descouens in 2001.The holotype (MHNDPal 2003-396) is a partial lower jaw with several teeth.
