Fulgurotherium is derived from the Latin "fulgur" (lightning), alluding to Lightning Ridge in Australia where it was discovered, and the Greek "therium" (beast), which is unusual in being a word that is almost exclusively applied to extinct mammals.
The species epithet, australe, means "southern" in Latin.
