Scorpiovenator is derived from the Greek "scorpio" (scorpion) and the Latin "venator" (hunter), because of the abundance of live scorpions at the digsite. The species epithet, bustingorryi, honors Manuel Bustingorry, owner of the farm where the specimen was found.

The remains of Scorpiovenator were discovered in the Huincul Formation at Bustingorry's Farm, 3 km NW of Villa El Chocón, Neuquén Province, NW Patagonia, Argentina. The holotype (MMCH-PV 48) is a nearly complete skeleton missing the right forearm and half of the tail.
