Yanbeilong is derived from the Chinese "Yanbei" ("North of Yanmen Pass"—the general area of the fossil site) and "long" (dragon).
The
species epithet,
ultimus, means "last" in Latin, referring to
Yanbeilong being a late-surviving member of the stegosaur lineage.
Discovery
The remains of
Yanbeilong were discovered in the Zuoyun Formation near Madaotou Township, Zuoyun County of the prefecture city of Datong, Shanxi Province, China, in 2011.
The
holotype (SXMG V 00006) is a partial pelvis (the sacrum, both ilia, left ischium and right pubis), seven back vertebrae, and a tail vertebra.
