Discovery
The first remains of
Gresslyosaurus were discovered in the Trossingen (formerly Knollenmergel) Formation (Keuper Group)
at Niederschönthal, Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, by Amanz Gressly in 1856.
The
holotype (NMB BM 1, 10, 24, 53, 530-1, 1521, 1572-74, 1576-78, 1582, 1584-85, 1591) includes a partial sacrum, four tail
vertebrae, a hand bone, and fragments of the hindlimbs,
including a partial left and right shin, an almost complete calf, and foot bones.
