Ondogurvel alifanovi
(Alifanov's Egg Lizard)Etymology
Ondogurvel is derived from the Mongolian "ondo" (egg) and "gurvel" (lizard), based on the hypothesis that the most derived alvarezsaurids were egg-eaters that used their large hand-claws to pierce egg shells.
The
species epithet,
alifanovi, honours late Russian palaeontologist Vladimir Alifanov who found the holotype specimen.
Discovery
The remains of
Ondogurvel were discovered in the Barungoyot Formation at the Nemegt locality, Ömnögovi aimag, Mongolia, by Vladimir Alifanov in 1999.
