Mahuidacursor is derived from the Mapuche word "mahuida" (mountain), in reference to the various mountains of volcanic origin that stand out in the landscape around the town of Rincón de los Sauces, close to where it was discovered, and the Latin "cursor" (runner). The
species epithet,
lipanglef (lee-PAN-glef), is derived from the Mapuche "lipang" (arm) and "lef" (lightly), in reference to the gracile nature of the specimen, in particular, the slender architecture of its forelimbs.
