Spiclypeus is derived from the Latin "spica" (spike) and "clypeus" (shield), referring to the many large, spike-like projections about the margin of its skull frill.The species epithet, shipporum ("ship-OR-um"), honours Dr. Bill and Linda Shipp—the original owners of the holotype—and their family. Discovery
The remains of Spiclypeus were discovered in the lower Coal Ridge Member of the Judith River Formation near the town of Winifred, Fergus County, Montana, USA, by Dr. B. D. Shipp and J. C. Gilpatrick in 2005.
The holotype (CMN 57081) is a partial skull and skeleton, badly broken and scattered prior to burial.
