Anteavis is derived from the Latin "ante" (before or preceding) and "avis" (bird).
The
species epithet,
crurilongus (KROO-ri-LON-gus), is derived from the Latin "crus" (shin) and "longus" (long).
Discovery
The remains of
Anteavis was discovered in the Cancha de Bochas Member of the Ischigualasto Formation, within Ischigualasto Provincial Park in San Juan Province, northwestern Argentina.
The
holotype (PVSJ 1085) is a partial skeleton and skull of a single individual.
