Caenagnathasia martinsoni
(Martinson's Asian caenagnathid)Etymology
Caenagnathasia is derived from "Caenagnathidae" (the family it belongs to) and "Asia" (the continent of its provenance).
The
species epithet,
martinsoni, honours Gerbert Genrikhovich Martinson.
Discovery
The first remains of
Caenagnathasia were discovered at Dzharakuduk II in the Bissekty Formation, Central Kyzylkum Desert, Uzbekistan.
The
holotype (N 401/12457) is a pair of fused dentaries of the lower jaws. A second specimen (N 402/12457) was referred to the species based on a right dentary from a slightly smaller individual. Another partial right dentary (CCMGE 402/12457) was found at the same locality in 2015, along with oviraptorosaur neck and back vertebrae and a partial thighbone, which were also assigned to
Caenagnathasia simply because it's the only oviraptorosaur known from the Bissekty Formation.
