Fusuisaurus zhaoi
(Zhao's Fusui lizard)Etymology
Fusuisaurus is derived from "fusui" (for Fusui County where it was found) and the Greek "sauros" (lizard).
The species epithet, zhaoi, honours Chinese paleontologist Zhao Xijin.
Discovery
The remains of Fusuisaurus were discovered at "Longcaoling Quarry" in the Napai Formation (also incorrectly referred to as the "Napan" Formation), Luibang village, Shanxu Town, Fusui County, Guangxi Province, China, by Wang Wei in the summer of 2001. Local farmers had been collecting fossils from this site, which was reported to the authors by He Wenjian, since the 1960s.The holotype (NHMG 6729) consists of two hip bones (left ilium and left pubis), tail vertebrae, most of the back ribs and the bottom end of a left thigh bone. In 2016-2017, a joint team from the Natural History Museum of Guangxi (NHMG) and the Bureau of Land and Resources of Fusui County (BLRF) reopened the quarry and a nearly complete giant right humerus (an upper arm bone, 183.5 cm in preserved length, with the field number LCL63) was added to the holotype.
