Heyuannia huangi
(for Huang Dong and Heyuan City)Etymology
Heyuannia is named for Heyuan, the City in which it was discovered. Heyuan literally means "origin of the river", due to it being situated at the confluence where the Xinfeng River (Xinfengjiang) flows into the Dong River (Dongjiang).
The
species epithet,
huangi, honours Dong Huang, the
director of Heyuan Museum, "who made great contributions in
the excavation and preservation of these fossils".
Discovery
The remains of
Heyuannia huangi were discovered in the Dalangshan Formation at a quarry in Huangsha Village, Heyuan City, Guangdong Province, China.
The
holotype (HYMV1-1) is a skeleton missing the end of the tail and forelimbs, and a partial skull.
