Ruixinia and its species epithet, zhangi, both honour Ruixin Zhang, a benefactor of the Erlianhaote Dinosaur Museum.

Discovery
The remains of Ruixinia were discovered in the Yixian Formation at Batuyingzi, Beipiao, Liaoning Province, northeastern China.
The holotype (ELDM EL-J009) is a nearly complete vertebral column, a few ribs, three-dozen chevrons, and a partial pelvis and left leg.
Behind Dongbeititan dongi and Liaoningotitan sinensis, Ruixinia is the third sauropod known from China's Jehol Biota.
