Amanzia greppini

(for Gressly and Greppin)Etymology
Amanzia is named for Swiss geologist Amanz Gressly (1814–1865) who discovered the first dinosaur fossil from Switzerland in 1856, and coined the term "facies" to describe a body of rock with distinctive features. The species epithet, greppini, honours geologist Jean-Baptiste Greppin.
ZooBank registry: urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:37860D8F-E49C-4F6B-9F51-705153499C1A.
Synonyms
Megalosaurus meriani: a tooth—MH 350 (Greppin, 1870)
Cetiosauriscus greppini (von Huene, 1922)
Ornithopsis greppini (von Huene, 1922).
Discovery
The remains of Amanzia were discovered in the Reuchenette Formation, at a limestone quarry in the Basse Montagne near the city of Moutier, northwestern Switzerland, by quarry workers in the 1860s. The fossil material attributed to Amanzia greppini represents at least four distinct individuals—A, B, C and D, with A and B around the same size, C roughly 15% bigger and D roughly 20% smaller—distributed across both the syntype series and the referred specimens.
All catalogue numbers are prefixed with NMB M.H.
